One Plan to Cut Emissions and Personal Income Taxes
| Benefits for: |
 | The Environment |
 | Middle Income Families |
 | Seniors |
|
This summer, Canadians have been asking for a plan that delivers action on climate change while investing in tax relief and much needed benefits for middle and lower income families and seniors. The proposed Green Shift offers exactly that.
The Cooksville area is particularly well-positioned to gain from the Green Shift. Ontario has already committed to eliminating coal-fired plants and increasing the amount of Ontario's electricity that comes from clean sources such as nuclear, hydro-electric, or wind. Being ahead on clean energy will put Ontario residents even further ahead under the Green Shift. Equally, Cooksville has relatively few sprawling larger-scale homes where heating costs might outweigh the benefits of tax relief.
|
| Tax Relief and Benefits |
 | Tax Cuts: Up to 10% less taxes paid by reducing the basic income tax rate from 15% to 13.5 % and lowering rates for higher brackets |
 | Seniors: An immediate increase in the Guaranteed Income Supplement reaching $600 by Year Four |
 | Families: Up to $1225 in a Guaranteed Family Supplement by Year Four |
Some Examples:
Tax Savings and Benefits by Year Four
| | Household Income | Savings and Benefits |
| Single parent with one child | $ 35,000 | $ 936 |
| Two-income Family with two children | $ 60,000 | $ 1,350 |
| Single Person | $ 35,000 | $ 357 |
With no new tax on gasoline, Canadians can choose to maximize their benefit by controlling their heating, cooling and electrical costs. Meanwhile the Oil Sands and other big industrial polluters will finally have a real incentive to change before climate change has an irreversible impact on our environment.
